How to Update Your iPhone to iOS 27

iOS 27 is the current major train as of 14 September 2026. It installs on iPhone 11, iPhone SE (2nd generation), and every later model Apple lists. Back up first, use Wi-Fi, stay on power, then Settings → General → Software Update. iPhone XS and older cannot join this train.

1. Confirm the phone is on Apple’s list

Apple’s iOS 27 page lists iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max, the iPhone 17 family, iPhone Air, iPhone 17e, the iPhone 16 family including 16e, iPhone 15 through iPhone 11, and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later).

Settings → General → About → Model Name. If the name is iPhone XS, XR, X, 8, or earlier, stop. The current OS will never appear.

Use the compatibility checker if you only know the marketing name.

2. Back up before the installer runs

Apple’s own download article tells you to back up first. Do it.

  • iCloud: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now, on Wi-Fi.
  • Encrypted local backup via Finder or Apple Devices if you need Health data and Wi-Fi passwords in the archive.

3. Give the installer workspace

A major train needs more free space than the listed file size. If iPhone Storage is tight, follow storage cleanup or install from a computer so the payload never lives on the phone.

4. Install from Settings

  1. Wi-Fi, not a captive portal. Plug into power.
  2. Settings → General → Software Update.
  3. If iOS 27 is listed, Download and Install (or Update Tonight while charging).
  4. If a file already downloaded, the iOS 26 article’s “Update to iOS 26 / Update Now” pattern still applies: open Software Update and install the staged build.
  5. Automatic Updates: Software Update → Automatic Updates → Automatically Install or Automatically Download.

5. Install from a computer when OTA fails

Finder on a current Mac, or Apple Devices on Windows. Check for Update, not Restore, unless the phone is already in a recovery state you intend to erase.

If Software Update never lists iOS 27 on a compatible phone, use the not-showing checklist before you restore.

  • Do not start a major install below 50% battery without a charger.
  • Do not use a VPN or school/hotel portal for the download.
  • Do not judge battery life in the first 24–72 hours.
  • Do not restore as the first fix for a verify error — delete the update file and fetch it again.

Can I stay on iOS 26?

Yes, until Apple stops signing it. iOS 26.7 shipped the same week as iOS 27. Remaining on 26 is a choice, not a hidden requirement.

Does every iOS 27 phone get Siri AI?

No. Apple Intelligence / Siri AI is listed for iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone Air, and iPhone Duo. iPhone 11–14 and non-Pro iPhone 15 install the OS without that feature set.
