TROUBLESHOOTING

Upgrade to iOS 27 Still Shows iOS 26.7

DO THIS FIRST

On the Software Update screen, pull down to refresh. If the version label is still 26.7, look at the file size: a ~10 GB+ “26.7” next to Upgrade to iOS 27 is often the 27 payload mislabeled. After install, confirm Settings → General → About → iOS Version before you download a second time.

What you are seeing

Software Update lists iOS 26.7, plus an “Also Available” / Upgrade to iOS 27 row. Tapping 27 opens a large 26.7 download. Launch-week r/ios threads treated this as a UI bug, not a missing update.

Why this happens

iOS 26.7 and iOS 27 shipped the same week (14 September 2026). Apple’s catalog showed both trains. Several launch-day reports said the 27 row reused the 26.7 title until a refresh or reboot. Installing the smaller 26.7 first is a real security point release; it is not always a required stepping stone.

Do this in order

  1. Settings → General → Software Update. Pull down once on Wi-Fi.
  2. If two rows exist, read both sizes. A small 26.7 is the iOS 26 point release. A large download attached to Upgrade to iOS 27 is the major train even if the title is wrong.
  3. You do not have to install 26.7 first unless you intend to stay on 26. Skip it if you are going to 27 today.
  4. After reboot, Settings → General → About. If it says iOS 27, stop. Do not fetch 26.7 afterward.
  5. If About still says 26.7 and you wanted 27, reopen Software Update and take the Upgrade to iOS 27 row again — after a backup.

If it is still broken

If pull-to-refresh never retitles the row, trust About after reboot, not the download title. Finder / Apple Devices → Check for Update is the second catalog if the phone keeps looping 26.7.

Questions this page actually answers

I installed the big 26.7 and landed on iOS 27. Did I skip a patch?

You installed the major train. 26.7 is for people staying on 26. You do not owe a second install.

Should I install 26.7 then 27?

Only if you are not ready for 27. Two major-adjacent downloads waste time and storage. Pick one train.
