Update iOS if
- The model is on the compatible list.
- You do not need Siri AI, or you already have a 15 Pro / 16-or-later / Air / Duo.
- Battery is not showing Service. Indexing after 27 is not a dead cell — check indexing first.
- You can free or computer-install around a 10–15 GB payload.
Buy a different phone if
- You are on XS or older. 27 will never appear. That is a hardware floor, not a stubborn Settings screen.
- You want Siri AI and you have 15 non-Pro, 14, 13, 12, 11, or SE. Apple’s Intelligence list does not include those.
- Storage is 64/128 GB and Intelligence plus Photos already lose the fight every update. A 16e/17 with more capacity is a storage buy, not an OS trick.
- Maximum Capacity is Service and a battery replacement still leaves you off the Intelligence list.
Hardware-to-hardware: 17 vs 16, 18 Pro vs 17 Pro.
Do not buy a phone to fix a catalog bug
Launch-week posts said “can’t update unless I buy a new iPhone” when the catalog was stale or titled 26.7. That is not a hardware requirement. Refresh Software Update and read About after reboot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will iOS 27.1 add Siri AI to iPhone 14?
Apple has not listed that hardware. Point releases patch the current train.
Is a battery replacement cheaper than a new iPhone?
Often, if the only problem is a worn cell on a 27-compatible phone you like. It does not add Intelligence.
