iOS 27 Battery Drain — Has Indexing Finished?

Open Settings. If you see a notice that search and Siri are still optimizing, or that indexing is incomplete, stop diagnosing battery health. Charge overnight on Wi-Fi. Recheck screen-on time only after that notice is gone. Restoring the phone on day one does not speed indexing.

What you are seeing

Screen-on time collapsed after installing iOS 27. Settings may show search and Siri still optimizing. Reddit threads ask this before any other diagnosis.

Why this happens

A major train rebuilds Spotlight, Photos, Mail, and (on Apple Intelligence hardware) on-device models. That work is front-loaded. Apple’s battery note says feature updates can change power use. User reports on r/iOS27 put the window at one to six days, longer on 128 GB libraries. A 16e that jumped from iOS 18 to 27 often looks broken until that job ends.

Do this in order

  1. Settings → Battery. Write down screen-on time and the top process. If “System” or indexing-related work dominates, wait.
  2. Look at the top of Settings for an optimizing / indexing notice. Mail may also say indexing is incomplete.
  3. Leave the phone on power and Wi-Fi overnight. Low Power Mode can stall the job.
  4. After the notice disappears, use the phone for one normal day before judging Maximum Capacity.
  5. If drain is unchanged after indexing, then follow the post-index battery checklist. Do not skip this page and jump to restore.

If it is still broken

Indexing finished, one full day of normal use, and a single app is not at fault: install any 27.x point release that appears. Still bad after that is Feedback to Apple or a battery Service warning — not another restore.

Not always. Some phones finish quietly. Use a full day of comparable screen-on time versus iOS 26, not the first evening.

Will a factory reset finish indexing faster?

No. You wipe the library and then index it again. Back up and wait first.
