1. See what is actually using the gigabytes
Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Note the Apple Intelligence / iOS line items before you delete photos. r/ios reports of a 16e going from 44 GB free to 19 GB after 27 were Intelligence models, not the OS binary alone.
2. Use the official Siri / Intelligence controls first
Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri (wording varies). If you see a switch for Apple Intelligence, turn it off. If you see Try Siri AI (Beta) and you do not want the models, do not join the waitlist. Apple’s 14 September 2026 note still treats Intelligence as optional on listed hardware and delayed in the EU / unavailable in China while regulation is pending.
3. User-reported workaround (not Apple Support)
Several r/ios comments say setting Siri language different from the device language (example: device English, Siri English (Canada) or the reverse) stops the models from staying resident. Reports also say it can take 30–60 minutes after a restart for Storage to drop. This is not an Apple-documented erase. It can also disable Siri features you still want. Prefer the official toggle when it exists.
4. What will not free the models
- Turning off Automatic Updates does not uninstall Intelligence files.
- Offloading Instagram does not touch the 8–14 GB model pack.
- A factory reset on an Intelligence-listed phone will download the models again if you stay on 27 in a supported language/region.
Do not do these
- Do not change Siri language if you rely on dictation in your actual language.
- Do not treat a 20 GB Storage line as a corrupt update. Confirm the category name first.
Questions this page actually answers
Can I turn it off on iPhone 13?
iPhone 13 is not on Apple’s Intelligence list. If Storage shows a large iOS jump, that is the OS, not Siri AI models.
Will this get Siri AI off a 16e?
iPhone 16e is on the Intelligence list. Use the Siri settings first. Language mismatch is a community workaround with uneven results.
