iPhone Storage Full and Cannot Install iOS Update

Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Offload unused apps, empty Recently Deleted photos, and clear Safari history. A major iOS update typically needs more free space than the listed file size because iOS stages, verifies, then unpacks.

What you are seeing

Software Update refuses to download or install because there is not enough free space.

Why this happens

The on-screen file size is the compressed payload. Installation also needs workspace for the new system volume. Photos, Messages attachments, and “System Data” are the usual blockers.

Do this in order

  1. Delete the stalled iOS update file if it is listed under iPhone Storage.
  2. Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted → Delete All.
  3. Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data.
  4. Offload large unused apps rather than deleting them if you still need their documents.
  5. If System Data is huge, restart once. If it barely moves, install the update from a computer so the payload never has to live on the phone.

If it is still broken

When local cleanup cannot free a major-update workspace, a computer update is the supported path. Do not factory-erase solely to install iOS unless you already have a verified backup.

Apple does not publish one number for every model. Budget well above the listed download size. If the phone cannot stage the file, use Finder or Apple Devices.

Will Offload App delete my data?

No. It removes the app binary and keeps documents. Deleting the app removes local data that is not in iCloud.
