1. Stop if you meant the current iOS
The current update is How to update iPhone (iOS 27). This page is an archive for XS/XR still on iOS 18. iPhone 11 and newer should not install 18 as if it were current.
2. XS / XR only: last major train
iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR cannot install iOS 26 or 27. Their last major OS is the iOS 18 train. Settings → General → About → Model Name. If you see iPhone 11 or later, leave this page.
3. Back Up Your iPhone
Always create a backup before a major update. You have two options:- iCloud Backup: Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Requires sufficient iCloud storage.
- Local Encrypted Backup (Recommended): Connect to a Mac (Finder) or Windows PC (Apple Devices/iTunes). Click "Back Up Now" with "Encrypt local backup" enabled. This preserves Health data, Wi-Fi passwords, and app credentials.
Read our detailed backup guide for the full procedure.
4. Free Up Storage Space
A major iOS update requires at least 12–15GB of free space for download, verification, and installation.- Check available space: Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- Offload unused apps (retains data): Tap an app → "Offload App."
- Delete downloaded media from streaming apps (Netflix, Spotify, YouTube).
- Clear Safari cache: Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data.
See our complete storage guide for more methods.
5. Connect to Wi-Fi and Power
- Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network. Do not use cellular data for major OS updates.
- Plug into a charger (20W or higher recommended). iOS requires at least 50% battery to begin installation.
- Avoid public or captive portal Wi-Fi networks where connections may drop mid-download.
6. Download and Install the Update
- Open Settings → General → Software Update.
- You should see "iOS 18.x" available. Tap Download and Install.
- Enter your passcode when prompted.
- Agree to Apple's terms and conditions.
- The download progress bar will appear. Do not disconnect from Wi-Fi.
- Once downloaded, tap Install Now (or schedule for overnight).
- Your iPhone will restart automatically and show the Apple logo with a progress bar. This takes 10–20 minutes.
- After reboot, follow the "Welcome to iOS 18" setup prompts.
7. Alternative: Update via Computer
If your Wi-Fi is unreliable or storage is extremely limited:- Connect your iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC via USB-C or Lightning cable.
- Mac: Open Finder, select your iPhone in the sidebar.
- Windows: Open Apple Devices (or iTunes on older Windows).
- Click Check for Update, then Download and Update.
- The update file downloads to your computer first, then transfers to your iPhone.
Do not do these
- Do NOT start an update on low battery without a charger connected.
- Do NOT disconnect your iPhone from the computer during a wired update.
- If the update seems stuck at the Apple logo for more than 30 minutes, perform a force restart (see our troubleshooting guide).
- Allow 24–72 hours after updating for background indexing to complete before judging battery life.
Questions this page actually answers
How long does the iOS 18 update take?
Typically 15–45 minutes total: 5–20 minutes for download (depending on internet speed) and 10–20 minutes for installation. The phone will be unusable during the installation phase.
Can I use my iPhone while it is downloading the update?
Yes. You can continue using your phone normally during the download phase. The phone only becomes unavailable during the installation/reboot phase.
What happens if the update fails halfway through?
Your iPhone will typically reboot to its previous iOS version. In rare cases, it may enter Recovery Mode. See our troubleshooting guide for recovery steps.
Can I downgrade back to iOS 17 after updating?
Only within 7–14 days of the update, while Apple is still signing the previous iOS version. After that window closes, downgrading is cryptographically impossible.
