iPhone Overheating After an iOS Update

Remove a thick case, take it off a wireless charger, and let indexing finish on a cool surface. Heat during the first day is common; heat that trips a temperature warning at idle after three days is not.

What you are seeing

The iPhone feels hot at idle or while charging in the first days after updating.

Why this happens

CPU and Neural Engine work after a major update is bursty. Wireless charging plus a case plus indexing stacks heat.

Do this in order

Unplug MagSafe/Qi until the phone is idle-cool.
Avoid Direct Sun and car dashboards during the first indexing window.
Check Battery for a single hot app (navigation, camera, a crashed background refresh).
If the temperature warning appears at idle after 72 hours, install any newer point release and, if needed, reset all settings — not erase — as a later step.

If it is still broken

Idle thermal warnings after point releases and a settings reset need hardware diagnosis. That is not an update-loop problem.
