The Apple Intelligence Divide
This is the single most important difference between these two phones. The iPhone 16 has 8GB of RAM and the A18 chip — meeting Apple Intelligence requirements. The iPhone 15 has 6GB of RAM and the A16 Bionic — permanently excluded from Apple Intelligence.- What iPhone 16 gets: Writing Tools, Notification Summaries, Smart Reply, Photos Clean Up, Genmoji, Image Playground, enhanced Siri with screen awareness, and ChatGPT integration.
- What iPhone 15 misses: All of the above. These features cannot be added via software update because the hardware RAM is physically insufficient.
If Apple Intelligence is important to your daily workflow, the iPhone 16 is the minimum entry point.
Performance: A18 vs A16 Bionic
The A18 chip is a full two-generation leap from the A16 Bionic:- CPU: ~30% faster single-core, ~40% faster multi-core performance.
- GPU: ~40% faster graphics with hardware ray tracing support (A16 has no ray tracing).
- Neural Engine: 16-core Neural Engine vs 16-core, but significantly higher TOPS throughput for on-device ML tasks.
- Efficiency: The 3nm fabrication process delivers these performance gains while using approximately 30% less power than the 4nm A16.
Camera & New Controls
Both phones feature a 48MP main sensor, but the iPhone 16 adds important new capabilities:- Vertical Camera Layout: The iPhone 16 positions its dual cameras vertically, enabling native spatial video recording for Apple Vision Pro.
- Camera Control Button: A capacitive button on the right edge provides quick camera launch, zoom control, and exposure adjustment.
- Action Button: Replaces the mute switch with a programmable Action Button (previously Pro-exclusive in the 15 series).
- Photographic Styles 2.0: Real-time tone mapping adjustments not available on iPhone 15.
Upgrade Verdict
The iPhone 16 is a strong upgrade from the iPhone 15 — primarily because of Apple Intelligence. This is the first time the standard iPhone model has been meaningfully separated from its predecessor by an AI feature gap rather than incremental spec bumps.
Upgrade if: You want Apple Intelligence, Camera Control, Action Button, or spatial video.
Wait if: You're satisfied with your iPhone 15's performance and don't need AI features yet.
Questions this page actually answers
Can the iPhone 15 ever get Apple Intelligence through a software update?
No. Apple Intelligence requires 8GB of RAM. The iPhone 15 has 6GB of soldered LPDDR5 memory that cannot be expanded.
Is the camera quality noticeably better on the iPhone 16?
The main sensor is very similar. The key camera differences are the Camera Control button, vertical layout for spatial video, and Photographic Styles 2.0 processing.
Should I buy an iPhone 15 at a discount instead?
If Apple Intelligence is not a priority and you want to save money, a discounted iPhone 15 remains an excellent phone with years of iOS support ahead. However, it will never receive AI features.
